Understanding God Through The Trinity

The Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

How do we explain this phenomenon? Why did God split himself into three parts? How do we reconcile the facts that there are three parts, but only one God?

In my opinion, having separate parts actually helps me to understand everything that God is, everything that He can be for us.

Think of an egg. There is a shell, a white, and a yolk. All have different functions, but together they are all an egg.

Or think of water. Depending on the situation, water can be in the form of solid (ice), liquid (water), or gas (vapor). They are all the same element, but in different forms.

God is the same way. He has many different functions and forms, depending on what is needed at the time. The vastness of who He is can be unfathomable for our human brains. We have three separate ways to describe Him, we could probably use a lot more.

God the Father is the shell of the egg, water in its liquid form. He is the one who created me, the one who loves me unconditionally. He is the one who gently corrects me when I go astray. He is where I go for comfort, for wisdom, for instruction. He spoke the Word. He surrounds the world, keeping everything together, providing protection. He flows all around us, covering everything we do. He is powerful, strong, and his works are evident.

So the Word became human and made his home among us.  He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.  And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son.
John 1:14

Jesus the Son is the yolk of the egg, water in its solid form. He is my friend and my brother, my confidante. He is my emotional attachment to the Trinity. He brings the fun and laughter to my life. He is my co-heir in the heritage of God’s family. He is my big brother, my advocate when the enemy speaks against me. He offers grace, and sacrifice, taking my punishment to save me. He is God made real, tangible. He was the one who was on the earth, who could be seen, touched, held. He brings the Word and makes it accessible to me.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard.  He will tell you about the future.
John 16:13

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness.  For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for.  But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.  And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will.
Romans 8:26-27

The Holy Spirit is the white of the egg, water in its gas form. He is difficult to grasp, hard to see. He fills the empty spaces. He is within us and all around us. He intercedes for us without words. He doesn’t force his way in, but when we have invited Him, his power builds from within us. He is the light and the peace. He provides the understanding of the Word.

How could we possibly understand that God is all of these things, all at once? Seeing Him as three parts helps me to understand a little better.
